Birth to Five Professional Development

The ESU 1 Birth to Five Professional Development Specialist supports educators working with children from birth through age five by delivering targeted professional development and personalized coaching. The goal is to strengthen teaching practices, improve classroom environments, and increase student outcomes in early childhood settings.  Support is grounded in research-based frameworks and aligned with Nebraska’s early learning priorities. Services are tailored to meet the specific needs of birth to three teachers, preschool teachers, paraeducators, community programs and district-level teams.

  • Effective circle time and small group facilitation
  • Intentional learning environments
  • Play-based instruction: Powerful Interactions & Joyful Learning
  • Integrating science, literacy, and math into daily routines
  • Science of Reading and early writing support

Assessment & Documentation

  • Formative and observational assessment strategies
  • TS GOLD documentation training

Behavior & Classroom Management

  • Pyramid Model Modules 1A–2B
  • Building relationships with children, families, and colleagues
  • Structuring transitions, routines, and expectations
  • Teaching emotional literacy, problem-solving, and self-regulation

Additional Targeted Support

  • Rule 11 compliance and implementation
  • Support with initial home visits
  • Paraeducator training and collaboration
  • ECERS and CLASS guidance
  • Classroom arrangement coaching
  • Ongoing classroom observations and feedback
  • Other supports as needed, based on individual classroom or district goals

How to Access Services

All professional development and coaching services are available at ESU 1 or on-site at individual districts/programs.  Flexible delivery options include group trainings, individual coaching sessions and classroom observations.
